Gomba recalled amid a land corruption scandal

MDC T Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora has recalled the embattled Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba from the council.

The recalling also affected five other Councillors.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Mwonzora said his party, was recalling Gomba from the helm of Harare City Council and five Councillors who he accused of having ceased to represent the interests of the party which deployed them to be city fathers of Harare City Council.

Gomba is on bail following his arrest over a plethora of corruption allegations involving improper parceling out of stands to party bosses and friends.

Mwonzoro wrote:

We hereby notify your office in terms of section 278 as read with section 129 of the constitution, we hereby declare that the following Councillors have ceased to belong to the Movement for Democratic Change which is a member of the Movement for Democratic Alliance which was formed in terms of the constitutive agreement a copy of which is attached hereto.

In terms of the Agreement, seven political parties entered into a pre-election agreement known as the Composite Political Agreement for purposes of contesting the 2018 elections.

In terms of the Agreement, the member parties retained their individual identities. They also chose their own candidates under their respective quotas.

Our party was the Party to which these Councillors belonged at the time of the 2018 elections. By operation of the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe judgement in SC 56/20, a copy of which I attached hereto I am the current Secretary-General and as such I have authority to make this correspondence.

The members listed below have by operation of clause 5.10.a. of the constitution of our party their membership is automatically terminated.

The other councillors he recalled together with Gomba are:

  1. Hammy Madzingira, Ward 10,
  2. Kudzai Kadzombe, Ward 41,
  3. Gaudencia Marere, Ward 32,
  4. Costa Mande, Ward 24,
  5. Happymore Gotora, Ward 7.

The MDC-T, armed with a Supreme Court ruling that declared Thokozani Khupe the interim president of the party, has been recalling legislators and councillors belonging to the MDC Alliance and has moved to replace the recalled legislators with its own candidates. ‘
