Greendale Councillor, Stewart Mutizwa, has been unanimously appointed Acting Mayor for the City of Harare.

The development was announced by the local authority on social media.

This comes after the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, had suspended the elected mayor and his deputy, in that order, councillors Jacob Mafume and Patrick Mukunguma.

The duo has pending criminal abuse of office cases in which they are both accused of parcelling Council land without following proper Council procedures.

However Zimbabweans have taken to social media to question the legality of the appointment.

Exiled former Foreign Affairs Minister Mzembi reacted on twitter asking the identity of the appointing authority.

“Appointed by who, isn’t this an elected position?” asked Mzembi who is now domiciled in Johannesburg.
