Former Energy Minister Advocate Fortune Chasi has said the power cuts the country experienced in the recent past demanded that responsible authorities be hands-on.

He posted on Twitter following a public outcry over power blackouts that had lasted for almost a week in some parts of Harare. He tweeted:

It was heartening to see people call poor service delivery – especially against ZETDC. It reminded me of my erstwhile mandate & how I used to descend to the ground to find solutions.

Do you remember how I was often ridiculed? How people would say “a whole minister bla bla”. Essentially saying I was doing menial work. A desperate situation demands one to be hands-on! That’s a key way of improving service delivery!

During the period in question, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) issued statements suggesting that the power cuts were as a result of rains-triggered faults.

The power utility dismissed claims that the blackouts could have been caused by the inadequacy of power in the country saying Zimbabwe was generating enough power to meet the demand.

Meanwhile, electricity has been restored in some parts of the country while some are still without power.

Production in the country was low last year and might be low again this year if power issues continue unabetted.
