Police shoot dead a US$2.5 m cash in transit heist suspect in Zaka

As the net keeps closing in on robbers who pulled off one of the most daring money heists in the country’s history, police detectives gunned down one of the suspects in Zaka.

iHarare has established from Masvingo based news publication Tell Zim, that on Thursday 14 January at around 1800hrs police detectives from the homicide unit shot 32-year-old Andrew Zigara at Ndanga Business Centre in Zaka after he tried to flee.

Andrew Zigara is alleged to have been part of the crew that stole US$2.5 million and ZWL$40,000 from a cash in transit vehicle on 7 January along the Harare Kariba highway.

Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Harare homicide section tracked down Zigara and discovered that he was in Zaka.

The CID officers confronted Zigara who then took to his keels which compelled detectives to shoot him in the abdomen.

He later succumbed to his injuries 30 minute later at Ndanga Hospital.

Zimbabwe Republic Police National spokesperson, Ass Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the development saying:

Police is investigating the case of the US$2.7 million ZB Bank cash-in-transit heist. I can confirm that one of the suspects was yesterday shot at Ndanga where he was hiding. He tried to flee, resulting in him being shot and unfortunately he died upon admission at Ndanga hospital.
