Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga became the first person to take the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine on Thursday. Chiwenga volunteered to take the Sinopharm vaccine at Wilkins Hospital in Harare, as Zimbabwe kicked off its ambitious goal to vaccinate the country’s population against the pandemic.

Unsurprisingly, the event attracted a lot of attention as the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine has been in the news of late. This after information from other countries indicated that the vaccine should not be administered to people above the age of 60 and below the age of 18. Chiwenga is 64.

There are also concerns that the vaccine is meant for people who are in good health as those with other medical conditions including cancer and HIV were advised not to take the vaccine in other countries. Critics also argued that the vaccine had not been fully tested against the South African variant of Coviddd-19 and that Zimbabweans were being used as unwitting guinea pigs.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s decision to become the first person to receive the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine resulted in mixed reactions by Zimbabweans on social media. Some applauded the Vice President for leading by example in these uncertain times. Others, however, expressed concern about the potential side effects given that there are concerns about the Vice President’s health.
