23-year-old Ronald Mukumbira, of Epworth, died on June 10 after he was discharged from the Sally Mugabe Central Hospital following a brutal assault. According to his mother Netsai Mukumbira, just before he died, Ronald specifically named Elias Mudzuri as one of the people who had brutally assaulted him.

Mukumbira told his mother that he had been drinking at the Duriro Pub & Grill in the Workington industrial area which is owned by Mudzuri. He alleged that he was later brutally assaulted by Mudzuri and his companions and left for dead following a heated argument.

Online publication Zimlive reports that Netsai Mukumbira woke up on Thursday morning, to the shocking sight of some men performing rituals at her son’s grave. The family suspects that the rituals are meant to disarm Mukumbira’s avenging spirit, ngozi, to prevent it from tormenting his killers.

“We woke up to this abomination at our home early this morning. We saw these people at the grave of our son in the early hours of the morning and we couldn’t see their faces clearly.

“They left some sprinkled bloodstains, salt, some red and a white cloth along with a clay pot [hari] at the grave.”

She added that the family were “afraid to confront them because we might get arrested.” This comes after several family members were arrested by the police on June 16, after they dumped their deceased relatives’ coffin at Mudzuri’s rural homestead in Zaka.

Mukumbira’s death was reported at Epworth Police who in turn contacted Harare Central Police where the docket was immediately referred to CID Homicide for further management.  National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the case and told state media that investigations are still in progress.
