Mwonzora nominated for MDC-T Leadership race
MDC-T interim Secretary-General, Senator Douglas Mwonzora has received his first nomination to contest for the party’s presidency in the upcoming party’s Supreme Court-sanctioned Extraordinary congress.
The elective congress was scheduled for the 19th of this month to choose the substantive successor to the party’s founding leader, the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who succumbed to cancer on 14 February 2018.
Mwonzora posted on Twitter expressing his gratitude to Masvingo Province which nominated him. He tweeted:
Thank you Masvingo Provincial and entire MDC-T Masvingo Province structures for joining the rest of the other Provinces which have DECLARED that I am the best person to put the shoes of the late President Morgan Tsvangirai…
Mwonzora will likely have competition from the interim President, Thokozani Khupe, chairperson Morgen Komichi and former organising secretary Elias Mudzuri as well as the expelled party national organising secretary Abednigo Bhebhe.
Bhebhe has since challenged his expulsion, and like the above-mentioned party leaders has also expressed interest in the party’s presidency.
