85% Of COVID-19 patients wont need hospitalisation – Mangwana
Amid reports that hospitals in Zimbabwe are overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients the Information, Publicity And Broadcasting Services Permanent secretary Ndavaningi Nick Mangwana has said just 15% of active COVID-19 will need hospitalization while the rest will be managing it from home.
Using microblogging site Twitter Mangwana said:
A very small percentage of Covid19 patients need use of inpatient services. An even smaller percentage end up needing ICU beds. Most are cared for at home. In Byo for example we have total capacity to admit 196 patients, we admitted 22, remaining with capacity to admit 174 more
Evidence show that, 85% of patients will not need hospitalisation, they will self manage and recover at home. 10% will need minimal management at a medical facility, whilst only 5% will require intensive care.
When asked if the information he provided was factual Managwan said these were the figures he received from the Ministry of health:
These are the actual figures I have been given by @MoHCCZim doc. I am combining both the public sector beds and the private sector. Even where staffing affects the “functional beds” we remain with capacity. I am happy to engage you om figures. Which is fact and which is fiction?
This came barely a week after Mangwana said people should be careful and adhere to COVID-19 restrictions because Zimbabwe’s hospitals were overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients.
Zimbabwe yesterday recorded over 1300 positive COVID-19 cases and 34 COVID-19 deaths.
