A suspect who was shot dead in Kelvin during a gunfire exchange with the police has been identified as Ronald Sibanda.
A family member exclusively told Zimbabwe Observer that, Sibanda’s remains, who in life was known as Fistoz were repatriated to Gwanda yesterday for reburial.
The late Fistoz was part of a 19 members gang that attempted to hijack a truck carrying cellphones worth R60 million, where a security guard also lost his life.
The family member who requested anonymity said Fistoz had just paid lobola for his Zulu girlfriend when he met his violent death under a hail of bullets.
“We went to Mpumalanga on16 February to pay lobola for his wife who he has been staying with for all along. He had just bought her a car and a big wedding was on the cards,” revealed the family member.
He also told Zimbabwe Observer that Fistoz was part of a gang that robbed a courier van at office Park in February around Vereeniging which was transporting cellphones worth R4 million.
The 34 years young man had just moved from Hillbrow into a plushy town house in
South Hills with his girlfriend.
The morning he died, Fistoz left R400k cash under his pillow with his wife to go and hunt for more moola.
But he never returned home to buy a minibus as per his plan, instead his body was wheeled into a mortuary van after police shot him dead during a fire exchange.
His family had to contribute money for his burial after the wife professed ignorance about the R400k.
“The wife simply told us that she doesn’t know where her husband put the money,” said the family member.
Automatic firearms including three R-5 assault rifles and two AK-47’s rifles were recovered from the scene of crime. Police are searching for more suspects.
