President Mnangagwa mourns MP Allum Mpofu

President Mnangagwa has sent his condolences following the death of Ambassador Beaven Shungu Murahwa and Cde Allum Mpofu.

Ambassador Murahwa – a stalwart of the liberation died today after a battle with diabetes.

After independence he played an important precursor role in the formation of the state security department before being deployed on the diplomatic front.

“The death this morning of Cde Beaven Shungu Murahwa after a long battle with diabetes was a great loss to the nation,” said President Mnangagwa in a statement.

“A brave liberation war hero and wartime member of the general staff, Cde Murahwa ranked among our bravest fighters who criss-crossed different war zones, most notably the Manica and Gaza provinces, in pursuit of our freedom and independence.

“He was in the thick of things when we came back home to prepare for elections after the historic Lancaster House conference, providing close security to our top leadership.

“I worked closely with him as the inaugural Minister of State Security during those challenging formative years of our independence,” said President Mnangagwa.

“Throughout his career as a security officer, he served his country with loyalty, distinction and honour, leading to his deployment in the foreign service when he joined the diplomatic mission in the United Republic of Tanzania, from which station he retired.”

President Mnangagwa said what adds to his distress and sadness on the death of Ambassasor Murahwa is that it comes barely after the death of Cde Mpofu who was the Member of Parliament for Mberengwa South. Cde Mpofu’s
death comes hard on the heals of former Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo early this year, another illustrious son of Zimbabwe who hailed from Mberengwa.

“As we mourn and mark these repeated losses which we have suffered as a nation, I urge us all never to lose heart, nay, to celebrate these dear and distinguished sons and daughters of our nation as torch bearers, and as some inspiration to our nation and all those who come after us,” said President Mnangagwa.

“On behalf of the party Zanu-PF, Government and my own behalf, I wish to express my deepest, heartfelt condolences to the Murahwa family, to Amai Murahwa, and the children especially, on this saddest loss.

“In the same vein, I convey my heartfelt consolations to the Mpofu family and the Mberengwa community for losing their distinguished sons and representatives.”
