Zimbabwe’s tallest man is being harassed by admirers
Joseph Midzi (23) brought business to a standstill in Mutare Central Business District as passersby were mesmerised by his unusual height.
Standing at 2.10 metres, Joseph, also known as Joe, is probably Manicaland’s tallest man. He told ZBC News that he grew by three centimetres in the last two years.
Joe avoids public places because some people make disparaging comments while others take pictures without his consent. He said:
In my family, I am the tallest although my parents are also tall. I always check on my height and between last year and this year I increased by three centimetres.
My height started to increase when I was 17 years old. When I last checked my height, I was 210 metres.
A lot of people abuse me for my height taking pictures without my consent. I need protection when I am walking.
I have difficulties in finding clothes that suit my height. When using public transport, I am only comfortable when I sit in the front seat.
One Mutare resident, a lady, confessed that Joe is is a rare breed of mankind and the tallest person that she has ever seen and would have sought for his hand in marriage if she was still single.
Other residents suggested that the nation should consider Joe a national wonder, a tourist attraction, and should take collective responsibility for him.
In Zimbabwe, Charles Nyoni of Hwange, whose height was recorded at 2.10m and Simbarashe Mhukahuru of Masvingo who is 2.11m, compete for tallest men honours, and they are now joined by Joe who has the potential to surpass all as he continues to grow.
