Babies starve as men demand to be breastfed by their wives
The Tanzanian government has issued a warning against men who crave breast milk.
According to Africanews, this practice has impacted the health of mothers and their babies.
This was revealed by Toba Nguvila, who is the commissioner of the Handeni District in the country.
The alarm came as the world was commemorating breastfeeding week which started on 1 August and ended on 7 August.
The commissioner said women had complained about their men who had developed a rare habit of craving breast milk.
“The practice, according to the commissioner, has been peddled by the narrative that this improves se_xual performance and muscle building among men,” the article read.
It is reported that this traditional practice is not new in East Africa.
In some parts of Uganda, the practice has been linked to gender-based violence as men allegedly become violent when they demand to be breastfed.
According to research by Kyambogo University in Kampala and the Britain’s University of Kent, men were breastfed at least once a day for one hour before the baby is fed.
