Soccer legend George Shaya Dies
Five-time Soccer Star of the Year and Dynamos midfielder, George ‘The Mastermind’ Shaya, has died. He was 77.
According to reports reaching iHarare, the legendary soccer star passed away early on Tuesday at his home in Glen Norah, Harare.
At the time of publishing his cause of death was yet to be established. However, it has been reported that he had been battling ill health for a while, a reason doctors recommended that his left leg be amputated in 2019.
His sudden death comes barely two weeks after it was announced that a documentary on his legendary status, as one of the most celebrated yesteryear footballers, would be premiered.
He is the first Zimbabwean soccer player to have won the Soccer Star of the Year five times; 1969, 1972, 1975, 1976 and 1977, a record which is still to be replicated by any player in history.
ZBC News reports that mourners are gathered at house number 4538, Mucheke Crescent, Glen Norah A in Harare.
Burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
