MP Mliswa calls for men’s protection from abusive woman
Zimbabwe legislator Temba Mliswa has called on the government to provide more protection for men in the country. According to the MP, men are under siege in Zimbabwe from women whom he alleged are abusing them. He claimed that the abuse is prevalent and that most husbands are suffering in silence behind closed doors. He also said that most of this abuse takes place at home and at the office.
The outspoken MP made the claims during a debate on what the government is doing to handle a surge in cases of domestic violence. Cases of domestic violence are reported to have gone up since national lockdowns were instituted to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Contributing to the debate, Mliswa said,
“The minister did not say anything about men who are also being beaten and shouted at by women especially those who are married. At least l do not have a wife. The men are under siege.”
“They (men) should also be protected because most of them are not happy in their homes or wherever they are because of harassment from women. They deserve to be happy too but most are being abused,” as per New Zimbabwe.
Minister of Women Affairs Sithembiso Nyoni acknowledged that in some cases of domestic violence, women are also the perpetrators.
“This is a serious problem across gender which needs to be looked at and resolved amicably.
“GBV has become another pandemic. Women are facing violence in their families and this is not just in the urban areas. We now have such cases in rural areas. The ministry is working with partners and together we have developed safe homes, one-stop centres where women can get assistance,” she said.
“We are also working with civil society organisations and other government ministries to deal with the problem.
The 50-year-old MP is not married and has recently declared that he is finally ready for marriage. However, the father of 19 has had his share of baby mama drama.
Earlier this year, his ex-lover Susan Mutami made a series of sensational allegations against him. Most of these relate to his alleged unconventional bedroom predilections. The health care professional accused the MP of failing to provide for his 18 children (then).
She has also declared that she will be challenging for his parliamentary seat in the 2023 elections. The Australia based health care professional declared that she is not happy with how Mliswa is leading the Norton constituency, insisting that the constituents deserve much better.
