DNA specialist and media personality Tinashe Mugabe has finally addressed the issue of whether he conducted paternity tests on his own children. Mugabe has been making waves across Zimbabwe as the host of the popular television show, The Closure DNA Show. This has led to many questioning and in some extreme cases demanding to know if he has carried out paternity tests on his own children.
The DNA Man, as Tinashe Mugabe is affectionately known, was game and addressed the question. During an interview with radio personality Chamvary on Tuesday, Mugabe said that he has not conducted any DNA tests on his two children because he has no doubts. He also insisted that if he should have any doubt in future, he would have the DNA tests carried out discretely.
Speaking to Chamvary, the principal consultant at Global DNA Diagnostic Centre said
Mine, to be honest, I haven’t tested but I do not have doubt yet. But probably, if I am going to have the third one, and if am doubting that child, then definitely and discretely, I will verify.
Mugabe also said that he is against compulsory DNA testing for all babies at birth. Responding to suggestions to make DNA testing compulsory from some quarters, Mugabe said that he was against the idea. He warned that it would lead to massive disaster.
It’s always wise and it is the best thing to do for paternity issues to be verified just after birth. Why? It’s because you will be able to identify the actual biological father of the child before it is too late. Before death strikes, before anything unforeseen happens. So it is best for the parties concerned. It’s also the best thing for the child, for a DNA test to be done just after birth.
But, it is not healthy for it to be made compulsory to say just after birth, everyone must be tested.
DNA profiling must be done after birth to cover issues to do with crimes and verification, in the event that probably murder has been committed and you want to identify the culprits. Then we need data that is stored to do the verification.
That is important for profiling. But not to the person after birth that this child is not yours, another one comes, the child is yours, there will be a disaster.
However, it is not clear if Tinashe Mugabe will continue with The Closure DNA Show after the medical authorities issued a hard-hitting statement against him and similar platforms for allegedly preying on poor people.
