MASVINGO – Cheered on by a huge crowd of supporters, Nelson Chamisa, the youthful Movement for Democratic Change-Alliance leader, delivered a scintillating message this week to Zimbabweans about elections in 2023.
“Even (Robert) Mugabe before he died,” he said, “told everyone Zanu PF was rotten to the core and looked at every candidate in Zimbabwe and decided to put his “X” on me.
“He realised he made mistakes and wanted to correct that and saw me as the one capable of taking this country forward,” he said.
“So, if him (Mugabe) as one of the founders of Zanu PF, realised his party was that rotten, shouldn’t the rest of us take a cue from him?” he asked amid ululations from those gathered. He was speaking to a large crowd of villagers in Masvingo, as he paid his condolences to the family of Joseph Mutema, a veteran MDC member who passed away in August.
Earlier, his convoy of 13 cars found the road blocked with boulders and logs by a mob of Zanu PF villagers singing and denouncing him. They hastily made a U-turn and as they did so, stones were thrown at their cars, damaging them.
The clearly organised villagers, who were waving neatly printed placards, were being given instructions by people in a Landcruiser, belonging to a prominent chief who is vying for the presidency of the Pan African Parliament Southern Africa.
The MP for the constituency is Ezra Chadzamira.
Two stones hit the front windscreen of Chamisa’s Landcruiser while a Toyota Fortuner carrying his close security had its rear windscreen shattered by a stone.
MDC councillor for Ward 5 Daniel Mberikunashe who briefly disembarked from a car where he was a passenger was hit by a stone in the head and severely injured. He was admitted to Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
The suspected Zanu PF supporters who spoke to The Mirror said Chamisa was not allowed in Masvingo West because “he brought sanctions on Zimbabwe”.
The incident, however, did not deter the MDC-A leader who immediately put Plan B into action.
He reduced his convoy to just three cars and used a different route to Mataruse Village, to the delight of a large crowd that was waiting for him.
Mimicking the act of wearing a scarf, he said, “That brother of mine whose neck is always draped in a scarf is zero competition to me. I’ll beat him hands down in an election!”
“Does he have a plan for the country?”
“None!” answered the ecstatic crowd.
“Is he popular?”
“Not at all!”
“Any friends outside the country?”
“Zero!”
“At least Mugabe was better,” said Chamisa, “his English was impeccable and was an eloquent speaker. Now, this one?”
“None of that!” roared the crowd.
