Locating Mahere, Chamisa in the Samson and Delilah story

The story of Samson, son of Manoah, of the tribe of Danite, who hailed from the region of Zorah, has been told countless times in contemporary Christian circles.
Never has it been as close to the Zimbabwean context as it is now.

Samson was a miracle baby, born to a barren mother in the same manner as Isaac the son of Abram and Sarah.

The story jumps to a total ingenuity or complete stupidity when Samson refused to heed elderly wisdom which would rather chastise him to keep within his tribesman and kinsfolk when it came to choosing a woman for marriage.

The story of Samson would sound the same as that of Nelson Chamisa, who hails from Bvukururu neighborhood of Gutu in Masvingo province of Zimbabwe.

The story tells of an arrogant and foolishly defiant Samson who defied wise counsel to find a woman from within his own tribe, to then find himself married to a strange woman plucked out of the Philistine tribe of oppressors to the Israelite community.

“And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, I will put forward a riddle unto you: if you can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change if garments,” Judges 14 verse 1 and 12 King James Version of the Holy Bible.

Now here is a man, said to be ordained of God to save a tribe, gambling with a mission in the hands if a strange tribe.

Now, dear reader, Samson, read Nelson Chamisa, is at the verge of losing his compass and purpose, all for the foolish love of a woman.

Nelson Chamisa has been in the trenches with Job Sikhala, Tendai Biti, Nkululeko Sibanda who had to leave his comfortable posting on the United Kingdom to help the cause.
But behold, it was not until a witty woman came, in the mould of Delilah.

Samson, a very masculine and powerful warrior of his time, is famed as being a man so prone to feminine deception, which mistakes would later cost his life.

In Chapter 14 verse 15, the Bible tells us that Samson came face to face with the greatest test of character when he faced a woman whom he thought loved him, who would later betray him.
Such has been the downfall of many a politician since time immemorial.

“And it came to pass on the seventh day that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice your husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, or else we burn you and your father’s house with fire: have you called us to take that we have? Is it not so?”.

” And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, You do but hate me, you don’t love me, you have put forth a riddle before the children of my people, and have not told it to me”.

She wept before Samson for seven days of the feast, and on the seventh day, Samson gave in to her demands and told her the riddle, because she lay sad on his lap.

She then immediately went away and told the riddle to the children of her people, the very Philistines who had oppressed his people.

Of course this unnamed woman was later burnt to death together with her father’s household.

The bed-hopping Samson then found himself in love with another Philistine woman who was named Delilah. Similar tactics were used with and by Delilah as in the first instance.

“And it came to pass that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, who’s name was Delilah. And the Lords of Philistines came to Delilah and said to her, Entice him, and see wherein lay his strength, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him, and we will give you every one of us eleven hundred pieces if silver,” Judges 16 verses 4-5 KJV Bible.

Please note that this writer is not saying, neither is he implying that he knows the power that ordained Fadzayi Mahere and fashioned the hammer that she has expertly used to destroy Nelson Chamisa’s political career.

Many people around Nelson Chamisa will not dare question why Fadzayi has suddenly become so powerful as to influence such major decisions as choosing the name of the party, its colours and symbols.

They choose to refrain from the subject for fear of the lethal force of reprisals that are sure to be meted upon them by the powers that be.

Mahere was only discovered on the political scene in 2016 as an activist when she joined Pastor Evans Mawarire’s #ThisFlag movement, only to stand as an independent candidate in the 2018 harmonised elections in Mt Pleasant.
She lost the election to Samuel Banda of the MDC Alliance, who was then said to be based in Malawi.

How ironic is it that today the same Fadzayi who took the MDC Alliance party by surprise to become its spokesperson, without tasting life in the structures as is the norm, has become the iron lady and king maker in Chamisa’s political life, influencing some of the most crucial decisions!

Fadzayi Mahere, the proverbial Delilah of our modern times, flew from nowhere in the political pecking order of the party that Nelson Chamisa led then, the MDC-Alliance, to dislodge all of Nelson Chamisa’s erstwhile colleagues and Comrades in the opposition struggles.

Delilah, the Philistine girl, did not leave Samson until she made him blind.

The Philistines used Delilah’s seductive skills to pacify Samson until they plucked out his eyes from their sockets.

Is Mahere going to drag Chamisa until he is blind?
Well, others may argue otherwise, but isn’t he blind already?

Isn’t it clear that his judgement has already been impaired and his vision made blurry at the advice of a woman he barely knew four years ago?

Some notable casualties of Delilah’s, read Mahere’s, escapades include one Nkululeko Sibanda, who hitherto was the all powerful spokesperson to the then all powerful MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.
Nkululeko Sibanda has since fallen by the wayside and has been reduced to a lame duck without a voice.

Charlton Hwende, who hitherto was the powerful Party spokesperson was swept away by Cyclone Fadzayi which effectively silenced and side-swiped Job Sikhala and Tendai Biti who were effectively gaged as all party and presidential communication was confined to the new spokesperson.

Of course the sharing of posts, or the appointment of leaders to the new political outfit will determine whether the old boys will stick together or not.

Spokesperson Mahere became the darling to Mr Chamisa such that everyone else lost relevance.

To note is the fact that Ms Mahere flew from the lower rungs of the party to become the most powerful operative in the formation within the shortest ever period in one’s political life.

Most people around Nelson Chamisa are still wondering over, except that they can not assign anyone to find out, the source of Mahere’s power.

Unlike Samson in the Bible, it will take time to find the appropriate answer as to the source of Mahere’s power.
Some allege seduction or sweet talk. But who can be so sure?

The subject if this thesis though is Chamisa’s vulnerability to the whims of a strange woman who only came midway into the struggle, to literally destroy political careers of all those men and women who thought they had built a political home around a self – ordained political godfather.

“And she made him to sleep upon her knees, and he called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head, and she began to afflict him, and his strength went away from him,” Judges 16 verse 19.

The story captures an unceremonious end to a once powerful man.

This in no way is implying how Nelson Chamisa will end his political career, but his end can almost be predicted, given the direction he has taken so far.

Fadzayi Mahere has literally transferred her Mt Pleasant campaign colours to the new outfit known as the Citizens Coalition for Change. Mahere’s dominant colour then was yellow as it is now with the new entity.
No doubt this new project is Mahere’s brainchild.

The question that will linger, or perhaps one that will be answered in the few weeks to come, is whether or not Nelson Chamisa’s erstwhile lieutenants will continue to stick around him.
