Did You Know That Not Every Registered Voter Is Eligible To Vote In The 26 March By-elections?
So Who Can Vote On 26 March 2022?
◼️ To be eligible to vote in the local authority/ council by-elections one should have registered before the death or recall of the councillor.
◼️ For the by-elections on 26 March 2022, there will be a different voters’ roll for local authorities since councillors were recalled on different days.
◼️ To be eligible to vote in the House of Assembly/Parliamentary by-elections you should have been on the voters’ roll before 8 January 2022. Under the Electoral Act, the voters’ roll is closed two days after the by-election is proclaimed. In this case, the by-elections for the National Assembly were proclaimed on January 6, meaning that only those on the voters’ roll before the cut-off date – January 8 – can vote.
When Will Results Be Made Public?
◼️ Publication of results of the 26 March 2022 by-elections will be done by 1 April 2022.
What Time Will Polling Stations Open & Close?
◼️ Polling stations are typically open from 7am to 7pm for twelve hours. However, there may be just cause to depart from these times but should meet at least the prescribed 12 hours. The constituency elections officer is mandated to extend the opening time if there are still prospective voters still in the queue until all of them have cast their vote.
What Form Of Identification Do You Need?
◼️ A passport or national identity card. It helps to carry the voter registration slip, although this is not a strict requirement.
How Many Seats Are Being Contested?
◼️ 28 seats for National Assembly and 122 Local Councils.
Will There Be Any Observers?
◼️ As of March 13, a total of 488 local observers, 18 foreign observers and four local journalists had been accredited. Accreditation closes today (22 March 2022).
What Happens If I Make A Mistake On My Ballot?
◼️ Voters are urged to be careful as mistakes such as tearing the paper or putting marks elsewhere other than the allowed places result in spoilt ballots and will not be counted.
◼️ If a voter makes a mistake they are allowed to return the spoilt ballot while they are still inside the voting booth. The spoilt ballot is returned and a new one issued at the discretion of the presiding officer after satisfaction of the genuineness of the error.
