“Mbudzi Roundabout Tender Inflated By US$43 Million To Benefit Tagwirei”
Mbudzi Roundabout being built in Harare costs US$42 million and not the US$85 million charged by the winner of the tender Kudakwashe Tagwirei, a close associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
This was revealed in a twit by Zimbabwe’s investigative and respected journalist Hopewell Chin’ono.
“I have spoken to the South African engineers who designed the Mbudzi Roundabout. They told me that its real cost is US$42 million, max, not the US$85 million being paid to Tagwirei.
Mbudzi roundabout is at the intersection of Simon Mazorodze and High Glen roads that feed traffic from western Chitungwiza and many old suburbs into Harare city centre as well as the heavy national and regional traffic on the Harare-Masvingo Highway.
In recent years, the roundabout has seen traffic log jams, especially during peak hours.
The designers of the roundabout told Chin’ono that the US$85 was grand theft.
“What do you say Zimbabweans? US43 million stolen just like that!” asks Chin’ono.
Tagwirei’s company Fossil Contracting, fronted by Obey Chimuka, which specialises in civil works, contract mining, road construction, earth works, building, structural works and plant hire jointly won the contract with Tensor construction and Masimba Holdings as TEFOMA consortium.
