Colonel Miniyathabo Baloyi has been trending on Zimbabwe’s social media spaces after she was confirmed as Zimbabwe’s new Second Lady. Colonel Baloyi replaced the beleaguered Marry Mubaiwa as Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s new wife.

Not much is known about Vice President Chiwenga’s new wife as she has largely been out of the public eye.

Background

Colonel Baloyi is originally from Filabusi, in Matabeleland South.

While we are not certain when her relationship with Vice President Chiwenga started, Miniyothabo Baloyi was one of a handful of people allowed to visit the former general during his lengthy treatment in China in 2019.

Education

She holds a first-class from PLA University of Foreign Languages.

Miniyothabo Baloyi holds the rank of Colonel in the Zimbabwe National Army. According to a report from January 2020, she had recently been promoted to the rank, although the exact date of her promotion was not stated.

Baloyi is multilingual and is said to be fluent in six languages including Mandarin, French and Zulu.

A LinkedIn profile with her name and picture lists her as a Government linguist a position she assumed in August 2009.

A source who spoke to online publication ZimLive in 2020 said that Chiwenga’s new wife, Colonel Baloyi is not a distinguished soldier although she has had quite some success in academia.
