She was arrested for avoiding an accident

Ellen Sikhala, wife of incarcerated opposition legislator Job Sikhala will appear in court on Thursday to answer charges of reckless driving.

POLICE arrested her today in Harare while on her way to Chikurubi Maximum prison to visit her detained husband who has been languishing in jail for the past 100 days on charges of inciting violence.

Sikhala family spokesperson Freddy Masarirevhu told Zimbabwe Observer that she changed lane to avoid an accident.

“They say she drove against oncoming traffic, but she only moved away from the lane after observing what appeared to be an accident. Other vehicles did the same and there was oncoming traffic,” said Masarirevhu.

Masarirevhu added that she was taken to Harare Central Police Station after disclosing her identity. She was released later after a docket was opened.

“They took the car but released it later. She will appear in Court on Thursday,” said Masarirevhu.

Reacting to the arrest, a leading political commentator Tambanavo Chamanyawi posted on social media saying such scare tactics of intimidation were typical of Zanu PF conduct.

“There is nothing new. These are the usual scare tactics employed by Zanu PF to intimidate families of their opponents. Even Winnie Mandela was persecuted by the apartheid system when her husband Nelson Mandela was in jail,” Chamanyawi.
