Zanu PF must reward Mberengwa faithful supporters with good roads: Prof. Ravengai

A Witwatersrand University Professor from Mberengwa has made a passionate plea to Zanu PF to appreciate their faithful voters by fixing Mberengwa roads.
The Johannesburg based Professor Samuel Ravengai was responding to Zanu PF’s victory in the just ended council by-elections where the ruling party trashed CCC with a wide margin. Zanu PF ‘s Albenias Nkonzo bagged 765 votes while Cornias Dongijena got 165 ballots in the just ended Mberengwa Ward 15 by elections.
Prof. Ravengai said Mberengwa has nothing to show for its tacit backing of the ruling party when other districts are flocking to CCC.
“Mberengwa has just delivered victory to ZANU PF. It’s time ZANU PF appreciates it’s faithful voters,” said Prof Ravengai in one of his tweets today
He added: “This is the road (no road) that links Mazetese and Mberengwa.”
All four Mberengwa constituencies have been religiously voting for Zanu PF. Not even once has any of the district’s constituencies or wards been snatched by an opposition party candidate since 1980, but development has remained elusive to the poverty stricken Mberengwa. Only Mataga Growth Point, mission schools and hospitals plus a few townships have tapped water and electricity.
Zanu PF’s Tasara Hungwe trounced Davis Shoko of CCC with a thunderous margin in the March by-elections for Mberengwa South constituency which fell vacant after the death of Alum Mpofu. Hungwe polled 7935 votes and Shoko trailed behind with a paltry 1425 votes. Mberengwa North is in the hands of Zanu PF’s MP Tafanana Zhou after fending off a challenge from Dr. Takavafira Zhou, an influential CCC leader and President of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe. Mberengwa East Marko Raidza of the ruling party received an emphatic approval from voters in 2018 while Joram Gumbo got the nod in Mberengwa West as well from the electorate.
Mberengwa has diverse mining activities and is known for its rich minerals including gold, iron ore, and emeralds among others, but the glitter of the rich deposits has continued to elude the district.
Mberengwa bore the brunt of the liberation struggle where bullets of freedom were fired. Ravengai added that the bravery of his mates in executing the war is not being matched by the pathetic roads of his home district 42 years into independent Zimbabwe.
“This is Mberengwa offices. A destroyed Rhodesian military vehicle which serves as a reminder of our contribution to the struggle. But on the roads, the evidence is disappointing. There you have it in pictures,” said the Prof of African Theatre & Performance and propounder of Afroscenology theory.
Prof. Ravengai, is a politically non-aligned academic who reigns from Msume area and is a former student of Chegato High School. He is very passionate about development in his home district.
