No gold in eGoli’s new review
By Claire Sipson
No Gold in eGoli is a book written by Sibanengi Dube published in 2018 as an eBook, which I managed to read this week. What a gripping and riveting story that exposes the tragic and scandalous lives of some Zimbabweans living in South Africa, especially Johannesburg.
The book challenges the myth of eGoli as a city of gold and prosperity, and reveals the harsh realities of xenophobia, crime, exploitation and prostitution that many immigrants face.
The book also shows how some Zimbabweans are trapped in South Africa by the economic and political crisis in their home country, and how they struggle to survive and send money to their families.
Dube is the editor of Zimbabwe Observer, who has a keen eye for detail and a flair for storytelling. He writes with honesty and compassion, capturing the voices and emotions of his characters.
He also writes with a sense of social justice and human dignity, exposing the injustices and abuses that many Zimbabweans suffer in South Africa. He uses simple and clear language, but also employs metaphors and imagery to create vivid scenes and descriptions. He writes from his own experience and observation, as well as from interviews and research. He is a skilled writer who can engage and inform his readers.
Dube’s writing skills are evident in his ability to craft engaging and realistic stories that reflect the diverse and complex experiences of Zimbabweans in South Africa. He uses dialogue, narration and description to create a sense of place and atmosphere, as well as to reveal the personalities and motivations of his characters.
He also uses humour, irony and suspense to keep the readers interested and entertained. He writes with clarity and coherence, using appropriate grammar and punctuation. He also uses literary devices such as symbolism, foreshadowing and flashback to enhance his stories.
The theme of No Gold in eGoli is the contrast between the expectations and realities of migration, and the challenges and opportunities that come with living in a foreign country. The book explores the reasons why many Zimbabweans leave their home country, such as poverty, unemployment, political oppression and violence. It also examines the difficulties they face in South Africa, such as discrimination, exploitation, crime and insecurity.
The book also shows how some Zimbabweans manage to overcome these obstacles and achieve their goals, such as education, entrepreneurship and activism. The book also highlights the cultural and social differences between Zimbabweans and South Africans, as well as the similarities and connections they share.
The story line of No Gold in eGoli is a collection of interrelated stories that follow the lives of different Zimbabweans in South Africa. The stories are set in various locations, such as Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. The stories cover different topics, such as love, family, religion, education, business, politics and crime.
The stories also feature different characters, such as students, teachers, journalists, doctors, lawyers, pastors, traders, hustlers, robbers and refugees. The stories are told from different perspectives, such as first-person, third-person and omniscient. The stories are linked by common themes, events and characters. The stories are arranged in a chronological order, from the early 2000s to the present day.
