Jacob Gwature, the Mayor of Bindura Town Council, and his associate Jonathan Kapasi have been arrested on charges of fraud12.
The charges relate to an alleged scam involving the UK-based Kitchen Table Charities Trust1.
The Trust had engaged Gwature and Kapasi in January 2021 through their company, Pamhodzi Rainbow Network in Zimbabwe, for a project to drill a borehole and install a solar system at stand number 1305 Budiriro 1, Harare1.
The project was funded with £5,000 (equivalent to US$6,970), which was deposited into the suspects’ local bank account by Misheck Mlambo, representing Kitchen Table Charities Trust1.
However, the funds were withdrawn and the borehole drilling and solar system installation did not proceed as agreed1.
The suspects have since appeared in court and have been remanded in custody until September 26, 2023, pending a bail application12.
This arrest is part of a growing trend of arrests targeting politicians from the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), including legislators Ostallos Siziba (Pelandaba-Tshabalala), Maureen Kademaunga (Sunningdale),
Harare deputy mayor Kudzai Kadzombe, and Chirumanzu constituency losing candidate Patrick Cheza34.
A lot of other CCC activists have also been arrested34.
