Kudzai Kadzombe, the Deputy Mayor of Harare and a councillor for the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), was arrested on Thursday12

She was initially charged with assaulting a voter, Saeed Musaengana, during the elections on August 2312. According to the allegations, Musaengana was walking along a path leading to a voting tent when he saw vehicles parking behind him.

Several people disembarked from the vehicles, and an unknown male approached Musaengana in an attempt to provoke him.

However, he was restrained by his companions1It is alleged that Kadzombe grabbed Musaengana’s neck before releasing him1.

In a surprising turn of events, prosecutors added another charge on top of Kadzombe’s initial assault allegation during her court appearance on Friday1.

She was charged with obstructing her alleged victim from entering a polling station on voting day last month, which is in contravention of section 149 of the Electoral Act12

This section of the Act deals with offences related to obstructing voters3.

Despite these charges, Kadzombe was granted free bail by Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi1

The CCC has condemned the arrest, viewing it as part of the alleged ongoing persecution of their members by the ruling ZANU-PF party1.
