Ian Makone elected Harare mayor
The capital city of Zimbabwe, Harare, has a new mayor for the next five years.
Councillor Ian Makone of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) won the mayoral election on Monday, beating his rival from the ruling ZANU-PF party, Councillor Temany Utete12.
Makone received 29 votes, while Utete got 1634.
Makone’s deputy will be Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe from Ward 41, who also defeated her ZANU-PF opponent, Councillor Susan Chuma, by 28 votes to 1734.
Both Makone and Kadzombe are members of the CCC, an opposition coalition led by Nelson Chamisa25.
He served as the chief secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office during the Government of National Unity from 2009 to 20136. He was also the chief advisor to Tsvangirai until his death in 20186.
As the new mayor of Harare, Makone faces many challenges in running one of Zimbabwe’s largest and most populous cities.
Harare has been struggling with poor infrastructure, water shortages, economic uncertainty, and corruption for years.
Many residents hope that Makone and his team will work to improve living standards and revive urban development123.
The new leadership of Harare is expected to bring a fresh vision and approach to the city’s governance and service delivery.
