South Africa pre-election period, drawing parallels with Zimbabwe
South Africa Pre-Election Period: Observations by Dr. Eddie Mahembe
In a matter of hours, South Africans 🇿🇦 will be voting in one of the most crucial elections since the democratic breakthrough in 1994.
Here are some interesting observations, from a Zimbabwean
- The South African Defence Force (SADF) has NOT issued a statement on who they will salute or not.
- The South African Police Service (SAPS) has NOT stopped, not even one, opposition rally. 🫣🤔
- There has NOT been any call for training of polling agents by the opposition or even DEFENDING THE VOTE! I’m surprised 😦 😦 😳
- Traditional leaders have NOT been called upon to herd their subjects to the polling stations. Is this real 🙈🫣
- The public broadcaster, SABC (radio and TV), is covering both ruling and opposition party rallies… including showing their adverts. I should be dreaming 😴 🫣
- NO opposition leader has been arrested…
- The ruling party (ANC) has NOT declared allegiance with the army.
- NO ruling party official has asked the opposition to go to war of liberation if they would want democratic elections.
- Ballots are not treated as sensitive and security documents… they are widely shared, even on social media as part of voter education.
- Everyone seem to mind their own business, even in rural areas. NO pungwes (all night meetings) by the youths militia or war veterans.
To think that we are just separated by a river, Limpopo 🤫🇿🇦🇿🇼
