A Harare man, Patrick Nyamana, has sought refuge in the courts after a harrowing discovery – finding his wife in flagrante delicto with her lover in their matrimonial bed. The ensuing fallout has seen him allegedly blackmailed by both his wife, Gladys Kupukai, and her boyfriend, culminating in threats of suicide and demands for hush money.

Nyamana approached the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order against Kupukai, citing relentless harassment and emotional distress. The crux of his complaint centres around the incident in their bedroom, a moment that has unravelled his family life and left him feeling cornered.

“I caught her red handed sleeping with another man on our matrimonial bed,” Nyamana stated in his affidavit. The confrontation that followed was fraught with drama and danger.

According to Nyamana, Kupukai’s reaction to being discovered was extreme. “When I tried to confront her, she drank rat poison in protest and even said I would be responsible for her death,” he recounted. The desperate act forced Nyamana to rush his wife to hospital, where she narrowly survived.

The situation has since escalated, with Nyamana claiming he is now being blackmailed. “Now she is threatening to do it again if I don’t pay her boyfriend,” he alleged. This demand, coupled with Kupukai’s shocking claim that Nyamana is not the father of their children, has left him feeling betrayed and vulnerable.

“I am not going to be blackmailed by my own wife when I raised those children as my own, and now she’s telling me they are not mine,” Nyamana declared. He further accused Kupukai of constant harassment and insults, particularly regarding his unemployment and perceived failure to provide for the family. “She harasses and insults me for not looking after the children yet she knows I am unemployed,” he said. “I have no peace, that’s why I am pleading for the court’s protection.”

In her defence, Kupukai offered a starkly different perspective, admitting to the affair but attributing her actions to Nyamana’s inability to provide for the family. “I took the poison because my husband was failing to provide for our family,” she stated in her response to the court. “He has been unemployed for months and I had no other choice but to engage in extramarital affairs to provide for my children.”

Kupukai also confessed to threatening Nyamana, explaining that she feared he would reveal the affair to her parents. “I threatened him because he was claiming that he wanted to tell my parents about the incident and I was left with no choice but to blackmail him,” she admitted. She further revealed that her boyfriend was also attempting to extort money from Nyamana to maintain his silence. “My boyfriend also threatened to expose our relationship and demanded that my husband pay him to keep quiet,” Kupukai said.

Presiding magistrate Meenal Naratam expressed serious concerns about Kupukai’s behaviour and granted Nyamana the protection order he sought. The order aims to provide Nyamana with a measure of security and prevent further harassment from his wife
