CCC targets supporters in diaspora for money
OPPOSITION Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party last week deployed a high-powered delegation to the diaspora as it scales up its voter and resource mobilisation drive ahead of the 2023 elections.
Senior members of the opposition party on Saturday attended a fund-raising ceremony organised by the CCC diaspora branch in the United Kingdom (UK).
The party officials who attended the ceremony include interim vice-president Lynette Karenyi-Kore and organising secretary Amos Chibaya, among others.
Karenyi-Kore told NewsDay that Zimbabwean citizens in the diaspora were pinning their hopes on the upcoming general elections for a political turnaround for them to return home.
“One of the branches in the UK organised the fundraising ceremony. They invited members from Zimbabwe to come and grace the occasion. We discussed various issues ranging from the prevailing socio-economic situation and the 2023 elections,” she said.
“Those who were part of the ceremony include asylum seekers, while others have fled the economic hardships back home.
“All those citizens hope for a change that will enable them to come back home, reunite with their families and start a new life. The deteriorating human rights situation in the country remained a cause of concern. This includes politically-motivated violence against our members and imprisonment of our members.”
CCC revealed recently that it was set to officially launch as a party after successful consultations with its supporters on a roadmap to the 2023 elections.
During the fundraising meeting, Zimbabwean citizens in the diaspora said government should put in place mechanisms that allow them to vote.
Recently, CCC refuted claims that it had been captured by Zanu PF ahead of the 2023 elections.
This came after the party and its Members of Parliament came under scrutiny for accepting US$40 000 housing loans.
CCC chief whip Prosper Mutseyami said they were taking the loans within the confines of the law.
“The loan in question is no excuse for State failure or the deplorable state of public service. It is no excuse for 42 years of mismanagement and misallocation of public resources and most certainly, the loan cannot bribe or derail a cause that is for us. We, therefore, reject equalisation. We are not Zanu PF and have never been Zanu PF and I have never been Zanu PF and we will never be Zanu PF, we are CCC,” he said.
“We have remained principled, committed and unwavering in our quest for transformation and change in our country. We have faced dictatorship and its billions of dollars weaponised against our people. We refuse to be sidetracked or seduced into agendas that have ulterior motives.”
