The Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has urged the government to convene an urgent meeting to discuss a cost of living adjustment (COLA) for teachers.

In a letter to Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Honorable Edgar Moyo, PTUZ Secretary General Raymond Majongwe expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions of service for teachers.

“The COLA crisis has extremely gone high and the Zimbabwean dollar component is almost totally gone. Teachers are suffering and the situation obtaining on the ground is unbearable,” Majongwe wrote.

Majongwe highlighted that the last salary review meeting took place in 2024, and with the first quarter of 2025 almost over, teachers are struggling to make ends meet.

He emphasized that teachers have made immense sacrifices, doing a lot with very little, and it’s time for the government to honor its obligation of paying them a living wage.

“Teachers in Zimbabwe have sacrificed a lot in serving their beloved country, doing a lot with very little, and it is now time for the government to honour its obligation of paying teachers a living wage,” Majongwe stated.

The PTUZ also raised several pending issues, including the establishment of a collective bargaining chamber, sector-specific allowances, genuine non-monetary incentives, and alignment of labour laws with the Constitution.

Majongwe expressed confidence in Minister Moyo’s leadership, hoping that he will consider their request and convene a meeting soon.

“As you may be aware, motivated teachers are the backbone of the development drive because teaching is the maternity ward for all the professions,” he noted.

With motivated teachers being the backbone of Zimbabwe’s development drive, the PTUZ is eager to find a solution that benefits both teachers and the government.
