A shocking scandal has rocked Masase High School in Mberengwa, where Deputy Headmaster Anymore Gumbo has disappeared amidst allegations of sodomizing school boys.

The abuse came to light when one of the victims was hospitalized due to difficulties with excretion, and subsequent examination revealed damage to the boy’s anus requiring urgent surgery.

According to reports, the boy confessed to the abuse and provided a list of other victims.

The headmaster of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Zimbabwe Masase, Albion Masukume, confirmed the crisis in a letter to parents, promising a full-scale investigation.

Gumbo and his wife had vanished when police arrived. The deputy schoolmaster is effectively on the run. The school has yet to announce interventions being implemented to help the victims.

Masukume was unavailable for an interview when the Zimbabwe Observer news team visited the rural-based boarding school on Thursday afternoon.

A team of officials from the ministry of primary and secondary education led by Silibaziso Bhebhe is at the Church School with the mission to investigate the sexual abuse of children and to implement immediate measures to help the victims.

In a written response to questions sent to him Bhebhe confirmed that investigations were underway.

“Investigations are underway. At the moment I cannot give you any details,” said Bhebhe. “The number is yet to be released. The member has not yet been apprehended. The police are on the ground. Procedure is taking its course to assist victims.”

Parents wearing sad faces were seen streaming in and out of the school gate to check on their children.

Former student of Masase High School and President of the Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe Dr. Takavafira Zhou expressed disgust over the ugly revelations.

“We wonder how someone from Mberengwa could engage in sodomy because this is unheard of in our district, except for a few old chaps who studied in Sierra Leone,” said Dr Zhou in a telephone interview with Zimbabwe Observer.
