Harare mayor, councillor Jacob Mafume, was this Thursday denied bail when he appeared before Magistrate Ngoni Nduna who said the MDC Alliance official interfered with a witness.

Mafume was rearrested on Monday after he allegedly tried to bribe Special Anti Corruption Unit (SACU) officers working on his abuse of office case.

MDC Alliance reported that the councillor was arrested at Strathaven Shopping Centre after he responded to a greeting from someone he knows.

He was on ZWL$30 000 bail following his arrest on 25 November 2020 on the pretext that he illegally parcelled out residential stands to his sister Rotina Mafume and secretary at his law firm Rutendo Muvuti without following due process.

He denies the allegations. In denying him bail, Magistrate Nduna said:

There was a condition for him not to interfere. He has already interfered (with a witness). This cannot be cured by any other condition but to send him to jail. Imprisonment only remedy. Bail is denied.

Magistrate Nduna remanded him in custody to 28 January 2021 which means he will not be with his family for this year’s festive holidays.

MDC Alliance claims the arrest is merely persecution directed at its member.
