Zimbabwe bans churches as strict lockdown rules kick in

Zimbabwe’s government has once again tightened its measures to curb the recent rapid spread of COVID-19 across the country with immediate effect.

The decision comes at a time when the country is reeling over the recent upsurge in infections and deaths – supposably spiralled by the festive season.

Zimbabwe’s vice president and minister of Health and Child Care, Rtd. Gen. C.G.D.N Chiwenga called for an emergency press conference on Saturday night where, in a statement, delivered the new developments.

iHarare has learnt that with immediate effect, all other gatherings, churches, bars, gymnasiums are banned with immediate effects for 30 days.

In recent weeks, the government had been mum on COVID-19 restrictions in the country.

Imbibers and party lovers had a field day under these terms. The latest being the case of a super spreader event in Mbare on 31st December 2020.

As such, the government found itself pilloried for not taking action.

In response to public criticism and developments in the country, below are some of the set restrictions to the COVID-19 upsurge in the country;

Public gatherings like funerals reduced to 30 people
churches, bars, restaurants, gym, etc banned for 30 days
wear faces masks always and offenders to be prosecuted.
only essentials services, hospitals, pharmacies and supermarkets to operate. Only opening at 8am and closing at 6pm.
Curfew 6pm to 6am with immediate effect.
Mining and agriculture to operate as before.
Intercity travelling banned
Stay at home and leave just for buying food and medicine or transporting sick relatives.
only exams classes to open now the rest remains closed.
Cros hoarder services stopped except for commercial cargo.
Air transportation remain as is
