Ramaphosa must fall disturbances on the cards

A planned unrest may be on the cards in KZN again.

There is a poster doing the rounds on social media of a planned shut down scheduled for Monday, 23 August.

It’s alleged this planned shut down is a continuation of the unrest that ripped parts of KZN last month.

The poster is written “Ramaphosa must fall” and it has an ANC logo.

However, the ANC has distanced itself from the shut down and has condemned the use of its logo and banner.

ANC provincial spokesman, Nhlakanipho Ntombela said the party has learnt through social media of the unrest scheduled to take place on 23 August in the province.

He said the ANC was not aware nor it had planned any unrest.

“The ANC has on countless times declared its support for former president Jacob Zuma. We also respect the rights of individuals to peacefully protest using legitimate channels as inscribed in our democratic Constitution, however exercising such rights should not infringe on the rights of others or break any laws,” he said.

Ntombela said people should refrain from using Zuma as a “scapegoat for violence”.

He urged cops to act firmly against any form of lawlessness, public violence, damage to property and disruption of economic activity.

“Disciplinary charges will be instigated for those of its members who would be found to be using the ANC banner for this planned chaotic riot,” said Ntombela.

Meanwhile, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has assured residents of their safety following the shutdown threat.

Kaunda said to ensure there is no repeat of the scenes witnessed during the July unrest, he had a meeting with the leadership of the city and heads of law enforcement agencies to come up with safety plans.

“We want to assure the people of eThekwini that all law enforcement agencies are working together to ensure people’s lives and properties are protected and safe. We have also activated our community crime-fighting structures to work with police and share information timeously if they notice any suspicious activity in their communities,” said Kaunda.
