Zimbabwe is the second country in the world with the highest road accidents behind the Dominican Republic of North America, a global network statistics agency has revealed.

According to data from the World of Statistics, 41 per every 100 000 people die of road traffic injuries in Zimbabwe.

The Dominican Republic tops with 65 whilst Sweden has the least number with two.

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency last month revealed that 8 897 people died in traffic accidents between 2019 and 2022.

The African continent records the highest road death rate with 26.69 deaths per 100 000 inhabitants annually.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), every year 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road accidents, with those under 30 being the most affected demographic.

This preventable epidemic hits the poorest hardest and is killing the next generation.

On a global scale, car drivers and their passengers are the first victims of road accidents, accounting for 29% of the number of deaths.

This is followed by drivers of three and two-wheelers (28%) and pedestrians (23%).
