A video of a lone Zimbabwean protester standing on top of his car and chanting slogans for a free Zimbabwe has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage and admiration for their courage and defiance.

The video, which was filmed in Harare on Tuesday, shows the protester holding a placard that reads “Zimbabweans want freedom” and shouting “Enough is enough” and “We are not afraid” to a crowd of onlookers.

However, the peaceful protest is soon interrupted by a group of riot police who arrive at the scene and start beating the protester with batons and dragging them off their car.

The video ends with the sound of gunshots and screams as the police disperse the crowd.

The incident has been widely condemned by human rights activists and opposition leaders who have accused the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa of using excessive force and violating the rights of citizens to express themselves peacefully.

“This is a clear example of how the regime is suppressing the voice of the people who are fed up with corruption, poverty and repression,” said Nelson Chamisa, the leader of the main opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

He added that his party would continue to support and mobilise peaceful protests until the government addresses the economic and political crisis that has gripped the country for years.

“We salute the bravery and patriotism of this protester who has inspired many others to stand up for their rights and dignity. We will not be silenced or intimidated by the bullets and batons of the oppressors,” he said.

The identity and fate of the protester are not yet known, but some social media users have claimed that they are a member of a civil society organisation called Zimbabweans United for Democracy (ZUNDE).

ZUNDE is one of the groups that have been organising anti-government demonstrations in recent months, calling for reforms and accountability.

The group’s spokesperson, Farai Maguwu, said that he could not confirm or deny if the protester was one of their members, but he praised their courage and sacrifice.

“This protester has shown us what it means to be a true Zimbabwean. They have risked their life and liberty to speak out against injustice and tyranny. They have shown us that we are not alone in this struggle for freedom and democracy,” he said.

He also urged other Zimbabweans to join the protest movement and demand change from the government.

“We cannot afford to sit back and watch our country being destroyed by a corrupt and incompetent regime. We have to take action and make our voices heard. We have to reclaim our power and our future,” he said.
