Factional rift in CCC exposed as funds meant for election agents go missing

A senior opposition CCC official and legislator, Charlton Hwende, who belongs to a faction in control of the party, has accused leaders from another faction aligned with former leader Nelson Chamisa of misappropriating party funds designated for election agents during the previous year’s harmonized elections.

The faction, now donning blue regalia and professing loyalty to Chamisa, is spearheaded by Amos Chibaya and Gift Ostallos Siziba.

They have been conducting meetings with pro-Chamisa supporters in various provinces, including Manicaland, Harare, the Midlands, and Bulawayo.

Confirmation of the missing funds came from CCC’s Marondera Central Member of Parliament, Caston Matewu, who claimed that his allocated funds were not received and hinted at financial impropriety, suggesting that “whoever received the money in Zimbabwe did not pass it on.”

Hwende took to his official X account to make the allegations in response to former CCC legislator Willard Madzimbamuto, who described the so-called blue movement as a deceptive and factional agenda. Hwende accused his colleagues of perpetuating deception within the opposition party, which he claimed was now “filled with compromised individuals.”

Hwende stated, “People who stole money for election agents are the ones driving this deception,” echoing allegations of embezzlement within the party.

CCC’s interim secretary-general, Sengezo Tshabangu, had previously revealed that US$2 million donated by the European Union, intended for payment to polling agents and other election-related expenses, remained unaccounted for.

However, CCC’s deputy spokesperson, Siziba, dismissed the issue of missing funds, asserting that all polling agents had been paid a total of US$105,000.

The allegations of financial misconduct and divisions within the CCC raise concerns about the party’s integrity and its ability to effectively pursue its political goals.

The ongoing internal strife threatens to undermine the party’s credibility as it grapples with allegations of mismanagement and corruption.
