40 Harare councillors dump Chamisa for Mwonzora
MDC-Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa suffered another huge political setback as 40 Harare councillors switched their allegiance to Douglas Mwonzora to save themselves from recalls.
Councillors elected on an MDC A ticket found themselves with two masters to serve, Chamisa and Mwonzora who both claim to be legitimate leaders.
Both masters are singing different tunes much to the discomfort of subordinates who are now being forced to dance to Mwonzora’s political piano for survival. Chamisa’s piano doesn’t pay bills, but invites recalling and loss of income.
MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende took to social media to lament about the dumping of his boss Chamisa.
He said the councillors who have kept their positions through switching allegiance to Mwonzora have resolved to support First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s projects in what would see President Emerson Mnangagwa’s wife forge partnerships with the country’s biggest local authority.
“All these Cllrs who have defected to Zanupf must never be voted again for betraying the will of the people of Harare. We are now left with only 5 Cllrs in Harare out of the 45 that were elected. Over 20 illegally recalled. Next week we will be naming and shaming these sellouts,” Hwende tweeted.
Others shot down Hwende’s threats adding that 2023 voting patterns might not be dictated by Chamisa.
“2023 is too far in politics, Chamisa’s good showing in 2018 plebiscite might not be repeated in 2023, as a lot of game changing events will continue to unfold until the next elections. Councillors, MPs and Senators are human beings as well. They need an income now to raise their families,” said Gorge in a social media post.
Hundreds of MPs, Senators and Councillors have already been chopped by Mwonzora, compelling the remaining few to dump Chamisa to save their jobs. Gweru councillors left the Chamisa outfit recently.
Morgen Komichi’s recent threat to recall all Chamisa adherents from public offices scared councillors to their skulls, compelling them to switch allegiance.
Chamisa’s greatest weakness is his inability to fight the recalls which are exposing his elected representatives to loss of income and parliamentary vehicles.
“Chamisa doesn’t fight for anyone unlike Morgan Tsvangirai. Instead he is telling his recalled subordinates that they never joined MDC for money or cars but to serve people. How can I work for the people without any income or a reliable means of transport,” complained one MP who was recalled by Mwonzora.
The recalled MDC MP who requested anonymity told Zimbabwe Observer that Chamisa was only interested in fighting for his position and source of income.
“How can they say they are not interested in cars when Hwende ran away with his parliamentary vehicle to Namibia? If they don’t want cars let them surrender them. All of them are clinging to these cars and they have taken their fights for the cars to the courts,” she said.
She maintained that Chamisa was the least qualified person to label victims of recalls as lovers of money as he was equally benefiting financially from the struggle.
“These guys receive donations under the cover of the darkness. They never declare these donations or account them to anyone. They got got $175 000 from Australians recently and we never knew about it until they started fighting over the money with the youths. Remittances from diaspora structures are never talked about. Such level hypocrisy within the top leadership is forcing others to adopt survival partnerships ,” complained a high flying official of Chamisa’s MDC A
