MDC-T presidential aspirant, Abedinico Bhebhe has described the party’s interim leader, Thokozani Khupe as a failed politician.

Speaking last Saturday at ward meeting in Nkayi South, Matabeleland North province, Bhebhe claimed that Khupe had divorced herself from the people’s project.

He also reiterated that his dismissal from the party National Council recently was a non-event. Bhebhe was dismissed for working in cahoots with rival MDC Alliance but he denies the allegations. He said:

One cardinal rule of a leader of a people’s project is to consult with structures, with the people you lead before making any decision. You cannot run away from that. You must not be selfish and dare think that the decisions you make resonate with what people want without consulting them.

In all our engagements with the people and party structures, the message is very clear. People want unity.

They are pleading with us to unite. However, we have some among us, such as Khupe, who have decided to go the opposite direction and try to wish away the people’s calls for unity. A leader, who refuses to unite people in the party, is not only bogus, but a failed selfish person. It won’t work as the people will simply divorce you from the party as is the case.

Bhebhe’s remarks come when Khupe faces allegations of being a Zanu PF puppet meant to weaken the opposition party.

He also speaks ahead of the party’s Supreme Court-sanctioned Extraordinary Congress scheduled to run from the 12 to the 20th of December to elect the substantive replacement to the party’s founding leader, the late Morgan Tsvangirai.

Presidential hopefuls, Khupe, Douglas Mwonzora, Morgen Komichi and Elias Mudzuri are reportedly divided on how to hold the event with Mwonzora hinting that it can be held virtually in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The congress which is expected to attract 4 000 delegates was initially pencilled for 31 July but was postponed after the police said the gathering was a health hazard.
