Ed dragged to court for suspending by-elections
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been dragged to court by local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and six aspiring candidates over the indefinite suspension of the pending by-elections.
The NGOs, the Elections Resource Centre (ERC), Women’s Academy for Leadership and Political Excellence (WALPE) want an order to compel Mnangagwa and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to announce the dates of the by-elections.
The other applicants are Ellah Tayengwa, Moud Chinyerere, Agnes Togareyi, Gracious Matsunga, David Gwanzura and Loice Gwangwara. Said WALPE in the application:
WALPE is also seeking opportunities for its members who are aspiring women leaders to contest in the by-elections in order to better prepare for the 2023 harmonised elections.
The applicants argue that the suspension of the by-elections by the Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga was in violation of the national Constitution.
The application has been filed at the High Court and the NGOs are being represented by Tendai Biti Law Chambers.
The by-elections are meant to replace mainly MDC Alliance legislators and councillors who were recalled since March by the interim MDC-T leadership on grounds that they had ceased to be MDC-T members.
