Zimbabwe will export electricity by 2025, Mutsvangwa

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Zimbabwe will be able to produce 5 000 megawatts of electricity in five years that will be enough to meet local demand and exports.

Mutsvangwa said this while officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for Zambezi Gas and Coal Mining Northern pit in Hwange on Friday where underground mining is set to start. She said:

… by about 2025 we should be getting 5 000MW of electricity and this will give Zimbabwe what we want and make the country a net exporter.

Mutsvangwa called upon the private sector to play a part in helping the Government in attaining Vision 2030.

Meanwhile, Zambezi Gas and Coal Mining operations director Engineer Menard Makota announced that the company has begun plans to construct a 750MW power plant after it was granted a license from Government.

Makota said the company expects to generate 150MW in the first phase into the national grid in 2024 which will be followed by 600MW by 2027.
