Government denies involvement

HARARE — President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has been sucked into a botched plan to clandestinely bury murdered Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Moreblessing Ali in Mabvuku, Harare, bizarrely without the involvement of her siblings and children.
Mnangagwa’s spokesman, George Charamba swiftly denied government’s involvement.
“I am not aware of anything of that sort. It is a rumour, like you said, and it remains just that,” he said.
Ali was gruesomely murdered, allegedly by a Zanu PF member, Pius Jamba, in June. Her mutilated body was found in a disused well at Linah Mukandi’s (Jamba’s mother) home in Beatrice.
Moreblessing’s family has refused to bury her, until the murder suspect is prosecuted. They also want their lawyer Job Sikhala released so he can fully represent them in the matter.
Sikhala, who is also a Chitungwiza legislator has, for the past six months, been jailed without trial for allegedly inciting violence over the murder.
In an audio recording yesterday, a woman who claims to be one of Moreblessing’s siblings said three relatives whom she accused of having been bribed by the government, had secretly planned to bury her at Mabvuku cemetery yesterday.
“I got the message on Tuesday morning from Moreblessing’s distraught daughter after two uncles and a cousin had gone to her house to tell her that her mother was going to be buried the following morning at 7 in Mabvuku. I tried to confirm with my siblings, but everyone was in the dark.
“There is six of us, but none was told about our sister’s planned burial. We suspect Zanu PF bribed these three. I think they were paid huge amounts of money. We were all in the dark, not even her son, Silent, knew.”
Said Moreblessing’s brother, Washington: “I was shocked to hear distant uncles and a cousin had connived to bury our sister without our knowledge. What are they trying to hide? As a family, we have been persecuted by this Zanu PF government. First, they butchered our sister. Now, they want to secretly bury her. She was killed like a dog. She deserves a decent burial. We have said that until our lawyer, Job Sikhala, has been freed, and has properly represented us in this matter, we will not bury her.”
