CCC Interim Committee demands books, accounts & records from Chamisa

Chamisa to walk out of CCC without his face

An interim running Zimbabwe’s opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has asked its former leader Nelson Chamisa to hand over the party’s books, accounts and assets after he quit on Thursday, accusing the party of being hijacked by the ruling Zanu PF.

Chamisa, who narrowly lost the 2023 presidential election to Emmerson Mnangagwa, said he was leaving the party he formed in 2021 and would announce his next move soon.

His decision came after a rival faction within the CCC, led by self-styled secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu, recalled and replaced several of his allies in parliament and local councils.

Mbuso Siso, the treasurer of the faction, told The NewsHawks, an online news outlet, that he would call Chamisa to confirm his resignation and ask him to provide the records of the party’s finances and donations.

“Our nine-member interim steering committee will meet as a matter of urgency tomorrow (today) to discuss the announcement by former CCC president Nelson Chamisa and the way forward,” Siso said.

“It’s unfortunate that he quit this way, telling people that he no longer has anything to do with the CCC without officially writing to us as the interim committee running the party.”

Siso said the committee wanted to know how much Chamisa and the party received from donations and how the money was used. He also said the party had a constitution and a roadmap towards congress.

“As acting Treasurer General, I want all the books, accounts and records of expenditures for accountability purposes. We need to know from records of how much he and the party received from donations and how the money was used. We also need to know if the party has some assets that should remain in its name after his departure,” Siso said.

The committee running the CCC has Dingilizwe Tshuma, former legislator for Entumbane-Njube constituency in Bulawayo as chair; Albert Mhlanga, former Pumula MP and deputy; Tshabangu, secretary-general; Khaliphani Phugeni, information; Sikhululekile Moyo, interim chairperson for women; Nomvula Mguni, ex-proportional representation MP; Siso, treasurer and Benoni Ncube, youth.

The self-imposed CCC structure implemented the recalls, leading to Chamisa quitting, saying the party has now been “hijacked and contaminated” by impostors and fraudsters.

However, Siso said the committee was the legitimate structure running the party and would work hard to take it forward.
